This is the first Italian study on painted and sgraffito decorated façades of Florentine palaces, a theme of great appeal considering that Florence is one of the most important as well as visited Renaisssance cities in the world.
The author has studied the compositional and allegorical themes of Florentine façades, listing and cataloguing their existing remaines, suggesting possible solutions for their conservation. The book particularly focuses on the recovery of painted façade in the neo-Renaissance revivals of ninteenth and twentieth century Florence, an almost unexplored chapter in the urban history of this beautiful city.
The result is highly useful monograph which sheds light on the reasoning and direction behind the changes in urban development, culture and taste which swept through Florence in that period of time. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs, specially commissioned, that allow, for the first time, a close up view of decorations, the book examines approximately 30 palaces, each with its own descriptive entry that includes the historical background of the families that commissioned the decorations. The volume is conceived for a wide audience that includes architects, art historians, experts in the decorative arts, and all those who have visited, loved and admired the city of Florence.
