The book features the frescoes by the Flemish artists, brothers Matthijs (1550-1583) and Paul (1554-1626) Bril who, having begun their artistic career in Antwerp, moved to Rome in the last quarter of the 16th century to become the most important landscape artists in Italy, whose work strongly influenced 17th century landscape painting. The Bril brothers' major commissions came from the Vatican, that houses a great part of their most important frescoes, but also from members of the great Italian aristocratic families, whose private palaces are often decorated by their landscapes and seascapes frescoes.
This publication is the first to be entirely devoted to the two artists, to the influence that their work had on the creation of what came to be known as a Flemish-Italian style in landscape painting, and, in particular, to the role of Flemish landscape painting in Italy. The authors' essays examine the frescoes and present new findings on the artists' commissioners and on the buildings for which the works were executed, revealing previously unpublished and precious archival documents.
