The idea for this book came to the author by reading a letter dated 1531 written by an agent of Duke Francesco Maria della Rovere of Urbino, who recounted having seen something very odd: "birds stranger than anything an artist would ever have been able to imagine drawing". These strange animals were indeed turkeys, the protagonists of this intriguing research by Sabine Eiche, who has analysed the turkey under different points of view - iconographic, linguistic, literary, artistic, culinary and historical -and has written a fascinating and beautifully illustrated essay, giving the reader a visually pleasing and intellectually stimulating book.
