This publication comprises the catalogue, written in 1933 by Leo Planiscing (1887-1952), of one of the most important private collections of small bronzes ever formed. At the time Planiscing was the director of the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna. This catalogue has never been published previously. The collection of antiquarian Luigi Grassi (1858-1937) included one hundred thirty-eight pieces, half of which were unique casts. The quality and number of pieces gave this collection an importance similar to the great collections conserved in museums and art institutes. After his death the collection was sold to the antiquarian Schubert, who dismemberd it. Today Luigi Grassi' s grandson, who carries his grandfather's name, propose this elegant volume comprising the entire photographic repertory of the collection, together with Planiscing's original descriptions. Fortunately both the photographs and the catalogue had been conserved by the heirs. The catalogue will be a valuable scholarly tool for critics and collectors with an interest in this field.
