The Thebaid are paintings so-called because they depict the desert of Thebes in Egypt, where it is said that saints and anchorites lived in solitude. The works belong to a singular figurative genre that enjoyed significant success in the fifteenth century. The idealized landscape, with its inclusion of strong symbolic meanings, saints, monks and hermits, gives life to a brief history in a continuous narrative of little scenes.
In this study, Alessandra Malquori accurately analyzes the iconography of these fascinating and unusual works, drawing from Greek and Latin patristic literature and examining the relationship between text and image, in regards to the series of panel paintings and wall paintings created in Tuscany and in the East between the 13th and 15th centuries.
