The publication of a new canvas by Sodoma depicting 'The rape of Europa', from a ceiling of Palazzo Chigi al Casato in Siena that included a series of paintings with mythological subjects, prompts a reconsideration of that group of works, their textual source and the decoration “all'antica” of the palace commissioned by Sigismondo Chigi (1479-1526).
