The territorial control of the historical and artistic heritage of the Val d’Elsa, where the presence of works from Florence prevails, has led to the discovery of a large ‘Resurrection of Christ’, which for stylistic reasons can be attributed to Francesco Botticini, but which until now has eluded scholarly research on the painter. This is an altarpiece made for the Corpus Domini confraternity, for which a notarial deed of 20 February 1499 recorded the payment of the balance to Raffaello Botticini, the son of Francesco who had died on 19 July 1497. The altarpiece is, however, extraneous to his production, all of which belongs to the 16th-century maniera moderna; instead, it constitutes one of the last major works by the 15th-century artist Francesco, who was active in Florence and in many important centres in the Florentine area. In the Chianti area it is suggested that two other works may be attributed to the elder Botticini: an altarpiece with ‘The Trinity and Saints’ in Santo Stefano in Montefioralle (Greve in Chianti) and a panel of the polyptych by Bernardo Daddi from the church of San Pietro near the Castello delle Stinche (Radda in Chianti).
